Politics Does your country have a dark past that the rest of the world doesn’t speak or know about?

Pictured is “Fine Gael” also known as the Blue Shirts, Irelands 1933s Fascist Paramilitary Organisation, that later became the Political Party Fine Gael which in some form or other has been the government for half of the last 100 years, and still is in government

Some other dark spots are:

Ireland blacklisted soldiers that joined the British army to fight the Nazis in world war 2, killing many from poverty and starvation, blocking them from having work in Ireland

Up until the 2000s Ireland still put women and children in work houses for being “un-catholic” aka born out of wedlock, too outgoing and rebellious etc, which led to nearly 80 years of beatings, sexual assaults, murdering of babies and despising of bodies in septic tanks, and auctioning off Irish children to rich U.S. couples

I've read that stuff like wooden houses are frowned upon, especially because of natural disasters. But Japan also has wooden houses and natural disasters and they're seen as cute and traditional.

People tend to think Serbia is freezing cold year-round, like it’s somewhere in the farrrr north. In reality, it’s actually pretty close to the Mediterranean.

Summers here can get absolutely brutal; 30-35°C for three months straight and heat waves frequently topping 40°C. Thanks to global warming, Serbia is now one of the hottest places in Europe during the summer, just like its Balkan neighbors. And unlike most of them...we are landlocked (we only have lakes and rivers, no sea to survive the summer)

Edit: The first image was a running joke about frying sunny-side up eggs on sewer covers, or just on the scorching asphalt. It’s really that hot. Yeah… we don’t actually eat like that, lol.

Environment What's the biggest/scariest species of snek from your country?

Post image
Upvotes

For India, I'll present the King Cobra.

This is the largest venomous snake on the entire planet with adults reaching lengths upto 19 feet or 5.8 metres. They are also the snake with the most amount of venom with 200-500 mg which, if injected all at once, is capable of paralysing or even killing a grown elephant(you heard that right).

Unlike most snakes that hiss, the King Cobra growls.

It can also rear up to a third of their body length which means that an 18 foot long King Cobra can rear up and look a 6' tall person square in the eye. And it can run as fast as humans even in this reared up state.

It is also one of the most intelligent species of snakes on the plant as they're capable of recognising and remembering faces and being sentient to a degree. They also build nests to lay their eggs in.

But, this intelligence also means that they think before striking and they will almost always avoid confrontations unless it's trying to defend itself in which case they're known to be vicious.

They also primarily feed on other snakes so they're actually not bad to have in your vicinity as they'll eat all the problematic snakes.

I am talking about a piece of ground beef with herbs served on its own, with no bread. In Greece we call it "bifteki".

NOTE: It's GROUND beef. MINCED. In Greek we most definitely do not call that a "steak" (brizola).

What food from your country do locals love but foreigners usually find gross or weird?

Post image

I'll start with this one from my country: biscuits with sausage gravy.
Locals can't get enough of it for breakfast, but a lot of people from other places think it looks like a mess or too heavy.

What's yours that everyone at home loves but outsiders just don't get?

Tiny kiosks selling everything: cigarettes, drinks, snacks, phone cards, toys - open late or (sometimes) 24/7. Very common in Greece.

They originally appeared after World War II and were often given to war veterans or people with disabilities as a guaranteed source of income.

(You’re looking at like… 20% of Seoul in the first pic.)

In South Korea, there’s a serious imbalance between the Capital Area (수도권 / Sudogwon - Seoul and its surrounding cities) and the rest of the country. Around half of the country’s population lives in Sudogwon and pretty much all prestigious universities, top hospitals, and major companies are concentrated in Seoul, which leaves the rest of the country falling behind.

One company from the US is Pan Am Airlines. They were known for being innovators for being the first to use jetliners and their luxury level of travel. They went bankrupt in 1991 after the Airline Deregulation Act in 1978, rising cost of fuel and the Lockerbie Bombing.

“America is a Continent”

I’m a Motorsport videographer and I get a lot of hate comments on TikTok as I cover European racing but sound “American”. I am Canadian. I will usually point this out to the commenter who then says “yeah, North America, you’re American.” But it’s quite clear they absolutely thought I was from the US. If I sounded like I was from Belize, they would not have said “American opinion invalid”.

I’ve also noticed a recent trend on social media that any time someone says “America” in reference to the United States…of America, there will be dozen of comments saying “Just US, America is a continent”. I’m also seeing a lot of “US Americans” or “US People”.

Yes, I am aware of the existence of the continents of North and South America. I also understand that in Spanish there is a different word for people from the US. But in English, “American” is the accepted term for people from the United States.

Like I don’t get it. I’m dumb maybe? I don’t know.
