It's one thing to make tight as a drum with a ceramic dish or bowl. But on aluminum like that is a whole nother

u/SomethingComesHere 3h ago
Yeah I’ve not yet graduated to that Saran status. Maybe one day!
I’m impressed!
And I mean it, I wrote a whole instruction comment recently on how to achieve this on ceramic-type or glass bowls: https://www.reddit.com/r/KitchenConfidential/s/tjxIBAYx8u

My plastic wrap skills are like my love life, soft and balled up in the trash.

u/SomethingComesHere 2h ago
And like one’s love life, Saran skills are a muscle that can be strengthened.
But if you don’t want to, that’s also fine (:

u/krizzzombies 2h ago
real. i've never been able to saran wrap anything without creating a scrunchy wrinkly mess. it always sticks to itself and never the bowl which seems real inconvenient because then how do you get a tight seal?

When I was younger I worked in kitchens and figured out it's just the quality of the wrap. If you bought it at a grocery store it's probably gonna be tough to work with, if it's a product intended for professional use it will work way better. We get ours at Costco.

Dude thanks, literally came to the comments hoping some saran wrap genie would reveal the secrets of this witchcraft. Also ngl, beyond being pleasing for myself it's such a perfect kitchen flex to impress family around the holidays.
"here's you're leftovers aunt Marie"
"Oh thanks u/BillysBibleBonkers, but i'd prefer if it was wra.. holy shit, it is wrapped, how did you do that?!"
But don't worry /u/SomethingComesHere, i'll take your guide and teach it to all those who gaze in amazement at my pristinely wrapped dishes, and i'll even pretend it was a strategy i painstakingly created myself. Thanks buddy.
Edit: speaking of my painstakingly created strategy, you kind of brushed over this part...
Once that suction has been created, you’re good to cut the Saran Wrap but ensure you do it in a way that the seal doesn’t get broken.
One does not simply cut the saran wrap with that janky serrated strip of bullshit without getting it all tangled up, much less keeping some perfect seal. Do you use scissors? Or a scalpel maybe? Perhaps there's some specific brand that doesn't have a shitty cutting system?

“Are you tired of plastic wrap that sticks to everything but the bowl?
Have you wasted hours of your life wrestling a tangled mess that refuses to cooperate?
Do you lie awake at night, haunted by your inability to protect your leftovers and questioning if your life is crumbling before your very eyes?
Have you begun to wonder if time is circular… and all moments lead back to this eternal struggle?
And when it finally sticks, crooked, wrinkled, sealing nothing at all, do you whisper to yourself, ‘This is who I am now’?”

I struggle to even get the wrap off the roll without it Tangling, and your buddy is out here creating art. 😭

u/stinkerfanny 3h ago
Right! It’s folded over itself, i’m using my chin, both hands, and the dish to try and unstick it from itself. 😂

u/DeputyDipshit619 3h ago
Honestly just buy a roll meant for commercial kitchens. It will last you quite some time, has a much better cutter, is larger and comes in a fairly functional box roller compared to the cheapo ones we can buy at Walmart that just fall apart after a handful of uses.

You can buy a dispenser that works like a tin foil box does, with the teeth.
Alternatively, if it fits, you coukd just repurpose a tin foil box.

There is a 1 in 4 chance I walk away from the cling film box a broken man with bleeding fingers.
When people post these perfect cling films it makes me feel like I have an undiagnosed learning disability.

You've come to the right place.
Half of us will diagnose you as an idiot for various reasons.
The other half will convince you that you're a freakin' genius by comparison.

For us older people, plastic wrap is not as good as it used to be because manufacturers swapped the effective but potentially toxic polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) for less clingy, more eco-friendly polyethylene (LDPE), making it less sticky and less effective at blocking smells and moisture, though better for the environment and less prone to chemical leaching into food. This change means it sticks less to itself and bowls, requiring tricks like wetting the rim or finding specialized brands.

100%.
Probably has one of the big commercial rolls. Makes getting a tight seal way easier because you can hold it in place with the cutting board then lift up on whatever you're wrapping while you cut.

Ah yes. It is the best when you can get enough tension and a clean edge all the way around to make it a drum with a clean tone.

The trick is that you have to pull the plastic wrap taught all the way around the pan and stick it to itself under the container. I worked fast food a billion years ago and we had pans of ketchup/mayo, and my pans were so tight you could bounce a quarter off of them.

u/gonnafaceit2022 2h ago
Wow. Every time I try to use that stuff, I end up throwing the whole roll away, I cannot operate it properly.

Your buddy needs to be hired by Sarah Wrap and make a commercial on how to create the perfect wrap. Then he’ll be famous. 😄

My boyfriend taught me to do this. Wrap it tightly then smack the top of the wrap.

To be fair, he probably has one of those awesome industrial huge rolls with the little slider to cut. When I worked in airline catering we had those and they make your life 448394’s easier. Don’t feel bad home Saran wrappers. I often wish I had one of those these days. 🥲
