Is it a high wattage bulb? I've heard of spotlights that generate so much heat, that if oils from skin contact the bulb, it could cause it to explode when powered on. The minor amount of cooling the vaporized oil provides is enough of a temperature differential to cause the glass to stress fracture, and do that.

Holy cow that’s terrifying. Looks like it’s a 7.5 W so hopefully that doesn’t happen link

Ah, so it's just a fancy lamp and the gloves are to not get finger prints on it. I think you are safe. ;)

u/IllustriousHeron2890 16h ago

Thanks! I may always kinda side-eye this lamp expecting it to explode…

u/EpicOtterLover 14h ago

Don't worry, an eight year old phone draws double that wattage, and some modern phones draw six times that amount. Just relax and enjoy your fancy lamp!

u/TNSchnettler 12h ago

Only explodes if you tape dynamite to it, 7.5w is led territory, we were talking about 200+ watt bulbs or 60w car bulbs

2

u/attentionpaysme 14h ago

Shoulda got the slim version then

2

u/KhazraShaman 8h ago

This kind of bulbs always explode whe you're not looking.

u/Soft_Money1378 13h ago

I am sorry, but 3,652 for a lamp..

13

u/AntiDECA 6h ago

And the cheap bastards couldn't even bother to provide free shipping with the $3,652 lamp!

1

u/ResearchCautious9665 6h ago

Lmao !! I wonder how much more is the shipping

1

u/Violoner 10m ago

But you do get a free pair of gloves!

It’s not that unusual if you want quality indirect lighting. I recently bought lights from Artemide, Louis Poulsen, Catellani and Smith, and Flos (architectural).

The LPs (PH5s, obviously lol) came with white gloves and a polishing/dusting cloth, Artemide it depends, catellani and smith do, not sure on Flos, they got sent to my electrician and I never saw the box - they were recessed lights so I doubt it.

Also, you aren’t buying these in any store, you almost certainly have to go to a store that specializes in high end lighting and furniture - like $40,000 couch high end.

Everything I mentioned is built like a brick house in Denmark or Italy, so you get what you pay for, and with the exception of some lower end product lines, the parts are still made and the products are repairable most of the time.

I’m not sure on Tom Dixon, last I checked the $700 pendants were made in China, but the melt line is probably made in Italy.

I'm not in the right tax bracket to understand any of that

15

u/Soft_Money1378 12h ago

😂 same

I like the claim of "quality indirect lighting" and then the lamp is a melted streaky blob with no photometric datasheet.

Correctly lighting a space for a specific purpose is a thing.

Buying prestige art from well known designers is also a thing.

But don't pretend like the quality of the lighting explains a $3.5k price tag.

u/SuperHuman64 8h ago

I used to work as an electrical inspector and i still had to look some of it up. Apparently ph5 is a particular lamp design, and the "melt" line is a lineup from one of the designers, a selection of lamps.

5

u/Previous_Balance9242 7h ago

Those are all very fine lamps, sure, but let’s not pretend we’re paying for quality, but for design :)

They’re well made, absolutely, but in pure build quality terms something like IKEA’s Evedal is just as good, if not better. The difference is in branding and luxury

14

u/rissispissed 10h ago

Haha wow. To spend fifteen times more on a lamp than I could budget for my three kids' Christmas... phew, time to get off the internet for me!

6

u/NoSolid6641 13h ago

What! This is so dope. It's going to be a conversation piece.

2

u/sachi3 4h ago

For 3.6k + shipping it better be!

1

u/Root777 2h ago

Just to put your mind at ease, 7.5 W is nothing (power wise). That’s more of the case in multi hundred watt bulbs.

u/_allycat 16h ago

You're probably referring to halogen bulbs. They used to be a popular option for puck, can, and track lights because the bulbs were small but bright before LEDs.

I've gotten these gloves with stuff just for cosmetic fingerprints though. Came with a chrome lamp I have.

5

u/fistbumpbroseph 15h ago

Many years ago when I worked at Radio Shack I thought I knew everything. It took ruining three 12V halogen bulbs trying to get the disco ball spinner working again before I figured out you can't touch it with your bare hands lol. I completed all of the training and somehow either that tidbit was missing or I just fucking missed it.

Thankfully that translated to being stupid careful replacing halogen bulbs in my (later acquired) car's headlights.

u/This_aint_my_real_ac 1h ago edited 59m ago

I switched my under the counter halogen to LED. Difference in temperature of 250 degrees. Only down side is I lost my restaurant style holding/warming spot.

Helped a friend install them at his house. On another visit one burned out, he complained about how the bulbs didn't last long. This was while he was installing the new one bare handed. Explained to him that you have to read the package which specifically tells you don't do that

2

u/taegeu 16h ago

Headlights do that all the time. And a sign of if the person who put them in is good or not.

2

u/atari26k 8h ago

Exactly this. I work with theatre projectors, and while the industry is transitioning to laser systems, there are still a lot of Xenon bulbs out there and it very important to handle with bare hands for this reason. Assuming this a normal lamp for a room, I wouldn't be sure as to why the gloves would be included.

2

u/3-3-2019 8h ago

Touching pretty much any kind of bulb other than fluorescent of LED will reduce the longevity of the bulb because the oil on your skin creates a hot spot on the glass which will be the reason the bulb fails.

I used to work the projector at a movie theatre so I got to learn all about it.. Pretty interesting stuff!

1

u/PM_ME_YOUR_BOOGER 5h ago

When I was in film school, we were taught to never handle the bulbs without gloves for this reason. Good safety tip, tbh. Exploding hot glass shards sounds bad

1

u/Junspinar 4h ago

I just assembled a gaming chair with the same gloves

1

u/its_justme 4h ago

Halogen bulbs are like this. But at this point LED has probably replaced all of that market.

A lot of furniture stores used to offer White-Glove services, I guess this is the best you can get in this economy!

u/IllustriousHeron2890 15h ago

DIY white glove service

1

u/IlexPauciflora 3h ago

My last 3D printer enclosure came with white gloves, but in that case it was because the rubber walls were impregnated with fiberglass. I use them when I swap or clean the buildplate so I don't get oily fingerprints all over it which can cause issues.

Those are probably included so you don't get fingerprints all over it, considering how expensive the lamp is.

His end up, RAGILE

Must be Italian

11

u/Milgram37 15h ago

It’s a major award!

41

u/SeekingLostInnocence 17h ago

Tell me you a fancy mfer without telling me

5

u/thathastohurt 17h ago

Not necessarily fancy, halogen bulbs for spotlights require gloves too. It depends on the bulb type of the fixture, and this is likely a very high powered light that is not LED. Likely a light for the garage/shop area, as that high of wattage/heat output from said lamp is going to be a lot in living areas of the house

30

u/UnholyGenocide 17h ago

That is a $3.6k lamp, bud.

8

u/AvEptoPlerIe 15h ago

Holy SHIT. I mean the gloves probably cost less than a dollar to include. Even for $3.6k, that’s still a thoughtful gesture from the seller.

1

u/thathastohurt 16h ago

Didn't see the link as it was posted at same time as comment. And funny enough it is an LED light, so it's not to prevent oil on a high wattage bulb, but rather fingerprints hah

1

u/Specialist_Ad4506 14h ago

Where? I still don’t see the link to the lamp. Inquiring minds want to know!

3

u/HillarysFloppyChode 13h ago

It’s a Tom Dixon Melt lamp

1

u/Specialist_Ad4506 1h ago

Oh wow… that is pricy! Thanks for filling me in!

2

u/Narpity 15h ago

Fucking ugly too

4

u/abscissa081 12h ago

Money can’t buy taste, but it can buy something for rich people to brag about to other rich people.

1

u/Eddievetters 2h ago

It’s stunning!! Def disagree with you there, bro.

1

u/tacocollector2 3h ago

How can you tell?

2

u/UnholyGenocide 2h ago

Op posted a link to it.

1

u/tacocollector2 1h ago

Thanks! I missed that before

2

u/IllustriousHeron2890 16h ago

This would have been more interesting for sure

10

u/Juuljuul 12h ago

Im one of those people that keeps stuff like this ‘just in case’. These exact gloves have been lying around for almost 10 years and i tossed them yesterday. Funny to see them here the next morning.

1

u/Jon1230 9h ago

I got a whole stack of them from the office chairs my office bought. They're great for car work that doesn't involve liquids. Keeps my hands cleaner when doing brakes.

3

u/Nuclear_eggo_waffle 14h ago

It’s so you know if you’re guilty or not

2

u/Shaw-eddit 14h ago

May be it's Halogen do not touch it directly

2

u/Final-Carpenter-1591 13h ago

I've gotten those same cheap ass gloves with alot of things. I recognize them because they always place the thumb way to high. Almost like two pinky fingers.

2

u/Bimblelina 9h ago

Had this with a wooden flatpack from Dunelm. Didn't use, but have kept in toolbox.

I think they're meant to help with gription when tightening bolts.

2

u/bazpoint 9h ago

Bought a self assembly sheet-metal mini-shed thing for the garden from Amazon a few weeks ago and it came with two pairs of kinda elasticy-cottony gloves in a nice speckled grey colour for putting it together - I guess they got fed up with folks cutting their hands on the sheet metal and complaining so easier to just put the gloves in. Anyway, they're not very thick but are surprisingly warm, look good and fit me perfectly - they're now my favourite gloves of all the many pairs I own 😂

Also have a fancy Balsalm Hill artificial Christmas tree, which comes with two pairs of gloves labled "fluffing gloves", which makes me giggle every year when I unpack it.

2

u/holdmychicken909 6h ago

They put these gloves inside $20 lamps from Amazon too

1

u/kwakimaki 12h ago

How odd. I just had a led light (quite big acrylic cut out) with white gloves also provided. I'm guessing direct from China?

1

u/Carterkane25 10h ago

If it doesn't fit, you must acquit

1

u/PurpEL 10h ago

Actually the lamp is to illuminate the victim you are choking with your gloves. Easy mistake.

1

u/SoggyBottomBoy86 7h ago

Dude, you rich folks spend a crazy amount of money on the ugliest stuff...

1

u/Contessarylene 7h ago

Well, what does this fancy lamp look like?

1

u/mattgen88 5h ago

They're for handling the sheet metal. Sheet metal is sharp shit. You'll appreciate the gloves if you ever get cut by it.

1

u/KrampusKid 5h ago

I recently put together an office chair for a family member, and it had a tiny pair of white gloves, too. I assumed it was so grease wouldn't get on your hands during assembly, but as far as I saw there wasn't any exposed 🤷‍♂️

2

u/Excoded 2h ago

I have made mistake (and it is a mistake) of holding unfinished chair by the hydraulic mechanism. It's greased.

1

u/MikeOxMALLbro 4h ago

I ordered wheel bearings for my car earlier this year that were wrapped in white cotton gloves. I was confused when I opened them and still can’t think of why they chose to use them for that purpose.

1

u/Atla_Tlok_Fan_05 3h ago

I thought this was a drawing for a moment

1

u/DjoooKaplan 3h ago

My new faucet too! They are really nice gloves too

1

u/Psyduck46 3h ago

Looks like a major award!

1

u/DJKGinHD 3h ago
