*a "frozen dairy dessert" biopsy

The fact that they don’t even meet the minimum criteria to call themselves ice cream and still have the nerve to slap “Premium Quality” right on the label pisses me off.

128

u/rainstorm0T 3h ago

"Premium Quality" is legally meaningless, a company is allowed to say that no matter what the actual quality is.

u/pegothejerk 3h ago

I love the meme that shows military members knowingly concerned when they see something claim it’s “military grade”.

Found the Marine, thank you for your service, and for keeping Crayola in business. Hopefully, they aren't rationing you any of the Cra-zee knockoffs!

13

u/eggs_erroneous 2h ago

Every member of the armed forces has spent time sitting on the side of the road in a broken down military vehicle. I remember in Germany we would do these big convoys to our field training exercises. A few times when a vehicle would break down, we didn't have a way to tow it. Someone would toss the guys in the broken down vehicle a box of MREs and some water and say, "Someone will be here to recover you in a day or two." That shit is fucked up.

If you have to call your product Premium, it’s probably far from it lmao.

IDK where the comment you are replying to got its info from, but Turkey Hill ice creams contain 12%-13% (depending on the mixings it has in it) milk fat, meaning they are legally ice cream. In the US that's important, its a legally protected product classification.

The minimum to be considered ice cream is 10% milk fat.

Side note, Turkey Hill blows most other "premium" brands out of the water and they literally sell it at gas stations around here. Its cheap as shit, but the only other brand they sell in stores that holds a candle to it is Tillamook.

9

u/Simba7 3h ago edited 2h ago

Turkey Hill sells actual ice cream right alongside their 'frozen dairy dessert'. Like literally side by side in the dessert aisle.

I'm also incredibly sad for you that it's one of your best ice cream options. Most places have a local favorite. WNY region is Perry's, which also makes a lot of the store-brand ice creams. When I lived in Texas it was Blue Bell.

Edit: I'm reading more of the thread and I'm wondering if Turkey Hill is your local favorite? And like they actually put in the effort there?
There seems to be a lot of Turkey Hill die-hards, and someone mentioned them being big in the PA area. Because around here, most of the Turkey Hill offerings on the shelf are 'frozen dairy dessert'.

7

u/SelfServeSporstwash 3h ago edited 2h ago

Blue-bell is dogshit 😂

Also, again, this specific carton is their ice cream. It’s 12% milk fat. Turkey hill sells 1-2 sorbets, which are frozen dairy desserts, but all of their ice cream is actually ice cream.

You are talking out of your ass

Edit: I stand by my comment, Blue Bell is not good, at all. But it felt like we were talking past each other because we were talking past each other. Turkey Hill products sold in Central PA are (mostly) made in central PA and the overwhelming majority of them are actually ice cream. Turkey Hill products sold elsewhere are (mostly) not made in central PA and a great deal more of them use fats from non-milk sources, legally making them not ice cream. We were unintentionally talking about 2 different products owned by the same conglomerate but made entirely differently and thinking we were talking about the same thing.

8

u/Rhodie114 2h ago

This specific carton is their “frozen dairy dessert”

Anything they can legally sell as ice cream has a “Premium Ice Cream” badge on it. The ones that don’t meet the standards have a “Premium Quality” badge instead.

Here’s the current label. It says “frozen dairy dessert” in the bottom left corner.

You’re right that this flavor used to be legally ice cream, but they got sold to a private equity firm back in 2019 and have been changing recipes.

6

u/Simba7 2h ago edited 2h ago

What a confident way to be incorrect.

I just searched Turkey Hill at my nearest grocery store (a local chain) and here are the top results. https://imgur.com/a/n8Yd2Fn

Of the 5 Turkey Hill items listed, 3 are 'frozen dairy dessert' and not a single one of those are sorbet.

Like I said in my edit above:
I'm reading more of the thread and I'm wondering if Turkey Hill is your local favorite? And like they actually put in the effort there?
There seems to be a lot of Turkey Hill die-hards, and someone mentioned them being big in the PA area. Because around here, most of the Turkey Hill offerings on the shelf are 'frozen dairy dessert'.

Blue-bell is dogshit 😂

You're allowed to not like something but it is objectively high quality ice cream and acting like a child isn't solving anything.

4

u/SelfServeSporstwash 2h ago

So it turns out "Turkey Hill" is only asctually made at Turkey Hill (an actual hill in Lancaster, PA that has a manufacturing facility and is surrounded by farms, from which they get the milk they use) in a very very small region. Around here ALL of their products are ice cream. You literally cannot buy the version you linked to, and the packaging is different.

A small selection of flavors made at this location are shipped nationally, including Vanilla Bean. The rest of the "Turkey Hill" products sold outside of central PA are licensed to the Kroger Co and made by subsidiaries.

So we are literally talking about 2 completely different products with different packaging, using the same brand name.

5

u/nonexistentnight 2h ago

Where did you find this information? I'm in Philly and can definitely buy Turkey Hill that's frozen dairy dessert. Usually it's the flavors that have lots of mix ins, as that drops the percentage of milkfat. There's also Turkey Hill All Natural, formerly called Philadelphia Style, that mimics the way Breyers was made before it got bought by Unilever. All of those flavors are labeled ice cream. The All Natural is by far the best ice cream imo as it is made without any thickeners like guar gum or carrageenan.

No no, it's made with actual milk.

5

u/SelfServeSporstwash 3h ago

I was gonna say... Turkey Hill makes ice cream, and good ice cream too. None of that "frozen dairy desert" bullshit.

6

u/-Neverender- 2h ago

It might taste good, and they do make actual ice cream, but in this case:

Nope.

6

u/SelfServeSporstwash 2h ago

right, so, it turns out they sell different products in different regions. All branded Turkey Hill, none made in the same facility, and only a tiny fraction of them are actually made *at* (or by) Turkey Hill (the company or the geographic location).

I didn't know this before.

The Turkey Hill products available to me are overwhelmingly actual ice cream. The Turkey Hill products available to commenters not located in a small region of Pennsylvania are overwhelmingly "frozen dairy dessert".

Both have the same brand slapped on them, but they have completely different nutritional information on their website.

4

u/-Neverender- 1h ago

I only knew because I tried Turkey Hill's Columbian Coffee flavor and it was "off". I looked up the reviews to see what other people thought and that was actually how I learned the difference between "ice cream" and "frozen dairy dessert".

I have gotten so many cool funky coupons from emailing brands like "my twix had no cookie", "this is just canned beans water? You forgot the beans" they are always like "oops, our bad here's 15 free cans of beans and a coupon for free rice" i had a haunted instapot. Everytime you plugged it in it screamed. Just one long continuous beeeeeeeeeep. Costco and instapot both sent me stuff. instapot sent me a replacement and Costco sent me a air fryer (they didn't have anymore of the instapot so they gave me a comparable item) and took back the haunted one.

•

u/odd84 54m ago

I wrote Stouffers about a factory error with some frozen mac and cheese. They sent me 50c off coupons for family sized dinners I've never eaten and don't intend to. I didn't even get a replacement for the mac and cheese I wrote about.

Or they didn't clear the nozzle between batches first, and the first couple containers got the vanilla they ran before the fudge mix. Sometimes the machine operators get overwhelmed and forget to run it a bit first, or they came in after a shift change and thought it was already done.

This has been happening more and more, and I believe it is just companies putting less of things in their product. like how sodas switched to the mini cans but it costs the same. 7

u/SelfServeSporstwash 2h ago edited 1h ago

They still use actual milk though? Like, one dude on this thread called it frozen dairy dessert and it just stuck for some reason as true. Their ice cream contains 11-13% milk fat depending on the flavor you buy, the legal definition of ice cream in the US is 10% or more.

Tillamook is also 11-13%

Ben and Jerry's is right at 10% basically across the board.

Love them or hate them, Turkey Hill ice creams are actual ice creams.

Edit: Long story short, and I did not know this when I made this comment; but this is literally a different product than what is labeled Turkey Hill here in central PA… where the actual hill, called Turkey Hill, that houses a dairy, is located.

If I walked to my local Weis the product I took a picture of would say Ice Cream. The product in this post is frozen dairy dessert.

This difference has caused confusion all up and down this thread, including to me. I did not know there had been a change. I heard about the brand getting bought and knew they were suddenly more broadly available, I didn’t put 2 and 2 together and figure out that much of the production must have been outsourced.

The product in my local grocers that has packaging similar to this, but is actually ice cream would be labeled as “Turkey Hill Simply Natural” elsewhere.

Love the core sample. This is real science!

26

u/svh01973 My Flair 5h ago

Science wouldn't result on one sample point. Need more data.

25

u/VP007clips 4h ago

Exploration geologist in the gold industry who has worked on a lot of drilling projects for core here:

A drill core isn't one sample point, it's hundreds to thousands of sample points taken along hundreds of meters of depth. After being inspected, having many measurements taken along it, and analyzed by geologists, the core is split into short sections and sent to an assay lab. A single drill core, while only representing a 1D view of the rock, provides a vast amount of data.

Of course you aren't going to build a mine based on a single drill result, but a single core might be enough to determine that a potential POI zone isn't worth pursuing further. This is less common for gold, since it can be pretty chaotic and erratic, we'd normally do a few holes at least to designate an area as not prospective, but it can be common for deposits like iron and coal.

5

u/Fun-Jellyfish-61 3h ago

Now I'm curious what the POI zone for fudge ripple is. And whether or not it's worth a couple seconds to create a new core sample of this frozen dessert.

There's something weird about that, because after seeing your comment, I looked online at pictures of Turkey Hill ice cream containers, and most do say ice cream, including this flavor (Fudge Ripple). But a few pictures I find don't say ice cream. So I'm not sure if they're making two different versions for sale in different stores or what.

21

u/bobsnopes 4h ago

They changed the recipe to enshittify it. On their website it’s all under “ice cream” (main header; sub header is “ICE CREAM AND FROZEN DESSERTS”), but if you go directly to Fudge Ripple it’s only “frozen dairy dessert”.

https://www.turkeyhill.com/frozen/ice-cream/ice-cream

10

u/MaximusMMIV 4h ago

That could be, or it could be that they’ve recently changed the recipe to manufacture it more cheaply. Of course the most sinister possibility is that their website just shows it like it’s ice cream because who is going to stop them?

I'm officially done with Turkey hill and it's not because of this which I've seen before. It's because they don't sell ice cream anymore. They only sell frozen dairy dessert. Every single flavor has switched from ice cream too frozen dairy dessert at all of my local grocery stores.

u/SecretaryOtherwise 4h ago

Breyers has an actual ice cream.

The creamery style for example. But yeah check the label.

u/lynivvinyl GREEN 4h ago

Kroger store brand gets my money but they're 87 miles away from where I live so it makes it a bit of a challenge. Otherwise that Black label chocolate and vanilla from Aldi is off the chain!

8

u/SuperannuatedAuntie 3h ago

Some is real ice cream, but you have to read the label. Look for the ones withe the black ring around the lid.

Notice how it went from “Premium Ice Cream” banner right up front to “Premium Quality”? 🤢

I work in an ice cream factory, please please PLEASE get a refund and make a customer complaint through the company. Idk about that specific company, but at mine we take them very seriously!! This should never have happened!! Makes me sad to see ☹️

4

u/katie4 1h ago

You being so genuinely upset makes me smile, lol. But you’re right because everyone deserves good ice cream!!

Fudge Ripoff

8

u/Pasta-hobo 5h ago

Contact the manufacturer, they'll probably send you a new one at the very least.

21

u/indiesunlight 5h ago

Turkey hill is nearly all “frozen dairy dessert” now and often disappoints. What’s the deal with the influx of frozen dairy desserts and lack of regular ice cream these days anyways

12

u/WhoSc3w3dDaP00ch 4h ago

To be called "ice cream" it has to be +10% milkfat (US FDA definition, other countries may have different requirements).

Frozen dairy dessert isnt ice cream...

7

u/41942319 4h ago

And lower fat % milks are cheaper to buy than cream. It's simple cost cutting.

5

u/R-Dragon_Thunderzord 4h ago

Core sample is fucking hilarious. 100% certain if you contact the company with this they will issue you manufacturer coupons for one or several free tubs of ice cream.

4

u/Zero-Phucks 5h ago

That truly would be the last turkey in the shop then

6

u/rainbowcamper 4h ago

You should let them know. I took a tour of Turkey Hills ice cream experience in PA and they talked about the quality checks they do to make sure the flavors are consistently distributed throughout the ice cream. I’m sure they’d like to know that their quality control process failed on this one.

5

u/Otherwise-Ad5183 4h ago

I'm going to say something and it might offend a few.

As Canadian I've noticed our food and it's packaging has gotten better after all of this tarrif bullshit.

Less empty air in boxed groceries such as cereal.

Canada already has the best icecream and cheese in my opinion!

That does suck marbles though!

4

u/ScaredPractice4967 4h ago

Turkey HIll ice cream?

Think I would have left that one on the shelf.

I had this happen over the summer for some Cow Tracks that contained like two pieces of chocolate cow in the whole tub.

I filled out their support form and they contacted me back to get the batch number and date off the container, then sent me a couple coupons for free ice cream.

4

u/ResidentCommand9865 4h ago

My man had to take a core sample to be sure.

7

u/lynivvinyl GREEN 5h ago

It's also not ice cream. Unfortunately it's frozen dairy dessert that didn't earn its stripes.

3

u/Jealous-Syrup3120 5h ago

This brand is always bullshit. Starts with the artificially flavored vanilla.

3

u/Loring 5h ago

Is there even any Turkey in it?

3

u/Hallelujah33 5h ago

Oops! All Vanilla

3

u/JoLudvS 5h ago

You're seriously using an apple de-corer to take a professional core probe/specimen from it? That's a scientific attitude I like.

3

u/flamingtoastytoast 4h ago

You send that core sample to the lab already?

3

u/Im_with_stooopid 4h ago

Maybe it's the coveted fudge at the bottom ice cream.

3

u/herewegoinvt 4h ago

Also contains no vanilla and possibly no ice cream as a lot of their products are 'Frozen Dairy Dessert' because they don't have enough milk fat to be classified as ice cream.

3

u/reddead_redemption 4h ago

What the Fudge!

3

u/songofthecosmos 3h ago

It's amazing that so many people complain about this exact ice cream and they are still selling it like this. At what point does it become flat out fake advertising and deception?

3

u/Educational-Cow7949 3h ago

Not the core sample 😂

3

u/huhnick 3h ago

It also doesn’t have any vanilla, enjoy your “frozen dessert”

3

u/the-nameless-002 1h ago

FYI : This is not ice cream. There is no mention of it in the box as well.

the apple corer taking a core sample of your ice cream is killing me

4

u/meme_landiz 5h ago

Why do you use an apple corer for ice-cream 😭

17

u/louiemay99 5h ago

For scientific research purposes

3

u/Kjb72 4h ago

To take a core sample.

2

u/Exponential-777 5h ago

Turkey Hill is a shitty name for an ice cream maker. But their ice cream is pretty good.

It has come to my attention that my fudge ripple ice cream is defective. -See attached photo

I would greatly appreciate if I could get the proper replacement for my ice cream. As I am in great need of the combination of vanilla, fudge, and said ripples™.

Thank you for your time,

P.S. Fudge me please.

u/InevitableFly 3h ago

Why are you core drilling ice cream like its the antarctic?

2

u/MisterAcorns12 3h ago

Man at that point it should just be called .

2

u/AmputeeHandModel 3h ago

It's not even ice cream I bet, or it would say it. It's probably "frozen dairy dessert", even though they boast about the milk.
