Legitimate question. I wonder if there is some odd rule or regulation that deems it necessary?

u/boxsterguy 14h ago

Pretty sure it's just styling.

u/ImN0tAsian 13h ago

Ya just mini styling. Gotta be a little quirky, thems the rules

u/Natedoggsk8 14h ago

And cheaper probably

u/derekkeller 12h ago

Cheaper than NOT having a rope?

37

u/Robdotcom-71 11h ago

A steering wheel without rope? Whoa... we have a trendsetter here..... /s

3

u/ShockRampage 8h ago

I know right, where would you put the rope if not on the steering wheel? On the visor? That is just silly.

1

u/Robdotcom-71 7h ago

Here's an idea... our next vehicles are eco-friendly... gone are the plastic door handles and we replace it with a bit of random recycled rope.....

1

u/SkivvySkidmarks 6h ago

It'll have to be hemp or jute though. None of that nasty polypropylene stuff.

0

u/TreeDollarFiddyCent 11h ago

That rope is securing the entire steering wheel so it doesn't just fly off.

u/scuderia91 12h ago

No chance that’s cheaper to make. That’s made that part of the wheel more complex to make with extra assembly operations from different materials over the standard spoke that would’ve been stamped out with the rest of the wheel.

1

u/Natedoggsk8 3h ago

More complex? Doesnt seem that way to me. It’s missing structure and replaced with a rope that comes in a roll

1

u/scuderia91 3h ago

Yes, it’s more complex. A standard third spoke with be stamped out and over moulded with the rest of the wheel. To add this fabric strap in means an extra assembly process, it means sourcing and shipping in extra materials, it means extra testing to validate the materials are suitable for this use.

u/libmrduckz 2h ago

cuts hand? yes no simply wasn’t part of the evaluation… maybe next year…

1

u/scuderia91 1h ago

More stuff like flammability, resistance to wear and fading, climatic performance. There’ll probably be about a dozen tests that’ll need to be done for a different steering wheel variant.

u/Stoyfan 13h ago

I doubt it lol

6

u/Natedoggsk8 13h ago

Cheaper the produce i mean. Like not having physical buttons

18

u/Stoyfan 13h ago

I know. I doubt it is cheaper to produce and design a bespoke wheel that has styling features which is not present in any other car.

This is 100% done for looks. It has nothing to do with cost

1

u/bobboobles 12h ago

Is it really bespoke when it's in ever single one of those cars?

6

u/timberleek 12h ago

well, maybe not B, but it's at least a spoke

0

u/boomshiki 12h ago

It affords is the opportunity to use the word "bespoke"

-7

u/deliciousleopard 13h ago

How does the rope replace physical buttons?

5

u/Evantaur 13h ago

A well placed rope fixes many problems

3

u/Iampepeu 12h ago

The future is rope!

1

u/Dxsty98 13h ago

Almost certainly not yeah

1

u/87utrecht 11h ago

It's not "probably" if you make it the fuck up.

It's ".. and I made it the fuck up".

1

u/pillowpants66 11h ago

Tell that to the Porsche 911 GT3RS owners who have to open the door using a “rope”

1

u/Natedoggsk8 3h ago

Thats for lightweight

1

u/linx0003 7h ago

Fewer parts to source, and inventory.

-1

u/TomeThugNHarmony4664 12h ago

This is the answer (and also Indi not like this).

And it probably is cheaper.

64

u/Puzzleheaded_Bake771 12h ago

Ahhh...yes...the great rope rule of 1996.

65

u/neityght 12h ago edited 11h ago

Have you ever seen another steering wheel with a stupid bit of rope there? The answer is no, so obviously there is no regulation to have one.

(How does that "legitimate question" (sic) have hundreds of upvotes? Are people really so dumb 😅)

1

u/rebeleagle 10h ago

There might be a regulation to have three ” spokes" in the steering wheel...

4

u/neityght 10h ago

There might be, but then BMW, Skoda, Peugeot, Hyundai and more are breaking that regulation by making steering wheels with two spokes 😅

0

u/rebeleagle 8h ago

I'm not saying there is one, I'm just saying the question is legitimate. Just because you know that these brands have two spoke wheels doesn't mean that everyone does?

Hell, just one country might have such a regulation where the rope is a workaround.

2

u/Maleficent_Curve_599 10h ago

Corvette has a two spoke wheel.

1

u/Iamhungryforlife 9h ago

yes. yes they are.

0

u/77entropy 11h ago

Now you made me go upvote them. You know, because.

2

u/muricabrb 10h ago

It's supposed to be "sporty", straps like that are used to save weight in race cars. You can find them on race edition cars like the Cayman gt3rs , the door handle is replaced with a strap like this... But I have no idea why it's on a steering wheel on a mini lol.

5

u/kaveman0926 12h ago

I'm just trying to figure out why she thinks that strap is a rope?

2

u/MKvsDCU 10h ago

LMAOOOOOOO

1

u/3zprK 10h ago

Strap sound fetishy

1

u/Lower_Debt_6169 10h ago

So does rope. Depends on your kink.

0

u/kaveman0926 10h ago

Where im from strap means gun so idk what you be doin in your spare time but you can miss me with that bs

3

u/heysuess 10h ago

What do you guys use to secure stuff to trucks/trailers for hauling?

1

u/stfunazibitchthrowaw 8h ago

I encase the load in a concrete sarcophagus and chip it out when I arrive at my destination.

2

u/heysuess 8h ago

But how do you secure the sarcophagus?!

3

u/GoochXravager 7h ago

With more sarcophagus placed around the important one so it don’t “ fall over”

0

u/kaveman0926 10h ago

Ratchet straps, not no damn rope 😂, well depending on the load there might also be some chains

1

u/SAFFATLOL 11h ago

It's just a styling this mini cooper does

1

u/elgydium 10h ago

They're testing all this new shit on us to see what works and then double down.

1

u/Dimathiel49 9h ago

It does move the shifter away from the middle allowing the center console to be used as storage

0

u/benabart 11h ago

Not a regulation but maybe just to make a marker where is up and where is down on the steering wheel and be possible to figure it out without looking?

2

u/M2g3Tramp 11h ago

It will be just a styling choice. Many new steering wheel designs have stopped with the "T" design of steering wheels and just do a linear connection from center to steering wheel. Either fully horizontal (as in video, without ribbon) or fully vertical. I shit you not.
